The basic functions of a computer are broken down into 4 different categories:
- Input
- Processing
- Output
- Storage
The input process consists of the programmer entering a source code (program). The computer then transfers the information into the system. Processing consists of manipulating and controlling the information within the computer system. Such manipulations are handled by the Control Unit, the Arithmetic Logic Unit, and temporary Storage.
The output process is the displaying of information, such as your programs, on the monitor or printed on paper.
Finally, the storage process is where information can be permanently saved until the programmer chooses to delete it. This storage usually takes place on a hard drive, diskette, or a cd.

These functions seem basic to the beginner computer user, yet there is a much more complicated level these 4 functions go to. When it comes time to repair your computer, a beginner will sit down, find the 4 functions, and try themselves to fix the problem. This decision can lead to a very lengthy and pricey diagnostic bill. Not only could you damage the system itself, you could make the whole device completely dysfunctional.
Once you have the computer up and running, more functions become available such as the operating system and the drives. The operating system is the core software component of a computer. Its main function is to interface between the computer and the outside world.
The operating system also controls the interface between the computer and the mouse, monitor, keyboard, using what is formally called drivers. Drivers translate commands from the operating system or user into commands understood by the component part it interfaces with. Drivers are mainly specifically written programs which understand the operation of the device, printer, video card, sound card, CD Rom drive, it interfaces with.
From personal experience, do not mess with internal drivers of a computer unless you are positive you know what you are doing. Disconnect the wrong driver, you’re whole computer will start to mess up. Then it can get so bad to where you have to take it to the support center to have it fixed.
There are some very crucial information contained in the drivers, operating system, and the 4 functions of a computer. One mistake could cost you the whole system. Make sure you read instructions when installing anything into the computer, and, if possible, have someone look at the device before yourself that has at least some experience with computers.
